Cutback Bitumen
Cutback bitumen is produced by dissolving pure bitumen in solvents or petroleum oils. The type and quality of cutback bitumen depend on the quality of the original bitumen and the type and proportion of the solvent. A higher proportion of petroleum solvent increases the fluidity of the bitumen.
Cutback bitumen is often used when heating equipment is unavailable, when high temperatures may degrade bitumen, when bitumen cools too quickly during application, when it cannot penetrate porous mineral surfaces, or to enhance worker safety and reduce fire risk and application time.
In road construction, cutback bitumen is used for surface treatments, penetration applications, surface asphalt, cold-mix factory asphalt, or on-site blending. Slow-setting cutback bitumen (MC) is produced by dissolving pure bitumen in kerosene, with the suffix number indicating the viscosity of the bitumen in centistokes.
